VCU's Jazz Faculty Quartet--saxophonist Skip Gailes, pianist Bob Hallahan, bassist Victor Dvoskin, and drummer Howard Curtis--joined by singer René Marie and violinist Joe Kennedy, Jr., gave what amounted to a clinic in improvisation to the tune of a blues shuffle.... She and Gailes exploited resonations and silences as skillfully as they did tones.
