Being primarily a performer, I've played in several big bands and know the amount of work it takes to get a large jazz ensemble ready for a performance. But recently I've come to realize that, much like the visible portion of a floating iceberg, the effort that a band's members put in is only a small fraction of the time and energy spent getting a song written, arranged, orchestrated, printed, rehearsed, and ultimately performed.
