The VCU Jazz Studies Program invites selected jazz students to spend a day with the jazz studies faculty and students of Virginia Commonwealth University. Included in the day's activities will be:

• master classes by VCU jazz studies faculty,
• performances at day's end by combos of students formed from different high schools in the region, rehearsed by VCU faculty,
• performances by VCU faculty and students, and
• lunch included for students and their directors.

The selected students will have demonstrated an exceptional desire and potentially strong ability to pursue the craft of jazz improvisation and may be considering continuing that pursuit at the college or professional level.

VCU Jazz Studies Faculty: Seven of our 13 jazz faculty will offer instruction, including Antonio García, director of jazz studies, trombone/brass; Skip Gailes, saxophone; Rex Richardson, trumpet; Michael Ess, guitar; Bob Hallahan, piano; Victor Dvoskin, bass; and Tony Martucci, drum set.

Registration Method: Antonio García invites students via their high school directors.

Opportunity: The VCU Jazz Studies Program offers students outstanding opportunities to pursue jazz performance and writing, as evidenced in part by such successful former students as Steve Wilson (sax, Chick Corea's Origin); James Genus (bass, Saturday Night Live Band; recordings with Dave Douglas, Michael Brecker, Mike Stern and John Abercrombie); Victor Goines (sax/clarinet, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; Director, Juilliard Jazz Studies); Alvester Garnett (drums, recordings with Abbey Lincoln, Cyrus Chestnut and James Carter); Mark Shim (sax, Blue Note recording artist, member of Terence Blanchard Sextet); Al Waters (sax, featured with Ray Charles); and Alvin Walker (trombone, Count Basie Orchestra). Some 60 majors are enrolled in VCU's Jazz Studies Program, which is celebrating the recent commitment of a $3 million gift from Mr. W. E. Singleton.
