The Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band
The Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band is made up of some of the most talented high school jazz students from the region. Rehearsals are Sundays, 2 - 4 p.m., culminating with a concert at VCU's Vlahcevic Concert Hall. Auditions are held in the VCU Singleton Center (922 Park Avenue, corner of Harrison Street) in the Fan District.
Auditions consist of the following:
- Prepared excerpt of swing or ballad-style melody (optional)
- Demonstration of any current scales known
- Sight-reading
- Improvisation over blues (optionally other self-suggested swing
tune), recorded accompaniment provided by you or VCU. (Improv
experience is not a requirement for entry but is an asset.)
For reading practice, please visit the rhythmic reading available on the VCU Jazz web site. Though you will not be playing this material in your audition (marked as it is for VCU students), it will be a great asset towards your preparation for sight-reading at your own audition.
To schedule your audition, contact Professor Antonio García at ajgarcia@vcu.edu beginning in late November. Download the Richmond's Bands brochure and Schedule Consent Form, complete them with the required signatures, and bring them to your January audition. A non-refundable fee of $150 will be due at the first rehearsal.
